In 1833 Rev. Erastus DeWolf, acting as a missionary of the Rhode Island Convocation preached in Westerly about seven months.
In the following year Rev. John A. Clark, another missionary of the Convocation, opened a series of meetings which was instrumental in establishing the present Church which dates from November 24, 1834. The first pastor was Rev. James Pratt.
In 1835 the church building was erected at a cost of about $6,000 and was burned down in 1S72. A new church was erected on the same site at a cost of $20,000.
A parsonage was built in 1836 at a cost of about $2,000.
The pastors have been Rev. James Pratt first and until September 9, 1839; A. H. Vinton, 1840; William H. Newman, 1841 and until November 3, 1843; Thomas H. Vail, 1844 and until December 22, 1857; Arthur Mason, 1858 and until December 15, 1859; J. P. Hubbard, 1860 and until March 7, 1872; D. R. Brewer, November 6, 1873 and until November 12, 1880; W. M. Groton, October 15, 1881 and until October 1898.
The present church building is a fine stone structure. The church erected in 1872, though still standing in good repair, is not used as a meeting place.
