Westerly,
is a post township in Washington County, Rhode Island, 42 miles south south west of Providence,
373 miles from Washington City. The surface is uneven and rough; soil, gravelly loam, adapted to grazing.
Bounded south by the Atlantic, and west by Connecticut. The Pawcatuck River runs on its north and west border,
and affords water power. Pawcatuck Village is situated on Pawcatuck River, in its west part, 6 miles from the
ocean, and contains 3 churches, 1 Episcopal, 1 Baptist, and 1 free, 2 banks, 2 academies, 8 or 10 stores,
1 cotton factory, and about 60 dwellings. Ship building is a considerable business. Vessels of 40 tons come to
the place, and of 80 tons 2 miles below. A bridge crosses to Stonington, where is a small connected village.
The Providence and Stonington railroad passes through the place. There are in the town, 12 stores with a
capital of $24,500; 2 fulling mills, 4 woolen factories, 2 cotton factories with 2,536 spindles, 2 tanneries,
3 grist mills, 2 saw mills. Capital in manufactures, $106,450. 14 schools with 574 scholars.
Population: 1,912.
